Japanese carmaker Toyota will invest 400 million zlotys (113 million USD) in its Polish plant to produce a 1.5-liter gasoline engine. It is designed for hybrid brand cars. Toyota will begin production of the new generation engine in 2020 at its plant in the southwestern city of Jelcz-laskowice. The internal combustion engine will be used in hybrid cars along with an electric motor.
“Hybrid propulsion systems currently account for 40% of Toyota’s European sales and their share is growing rapidly”, said the head of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland, Eiji Takeichi. “This investment means we can respond to market demand”, added he.
Toyota, the global automotive giant, has two component plants in Lower Silesia in Poland. More than 500 people work in the Jelcz-laskowice engine plant, while 1,500 people are involved in the other company in the city of Wałbrzych, where they produce transmissions.
In September Toyota said that it had established a new venture to develop fully electric vehicle technology with partner Mazda Motor, seeking to catch up with rivals in an increasingly frenetic race to produce more battery-powered cars.
