Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba signed cooperate agreement with Disney. Following the agreement Alibaba Digital Media and Entertainment Group will include over 1,000 Disney episodes, including some of its best productions.
The deal happens at a time when Disney faces challenges in providing digital TV content in China. In 2016, its joint venture with Alibaba – DisneyLife, stopped work due to intervention of the Chinese regulators. This happened five months after the start of its operations. The reason for closing the service was not publicly announced.
“The addition of Disney content greatly enriches the library of quality international content in Alibaba’s media and entertainment ecosystem, giving us a leading edge in the distribution of foreign content in China”, said the president of Youku at Alibaba Digital Media and Entertainment Group, Yang Weidong.
Alibaba does not disclose the value of the deal.
Youku reaches up to 580 million devices and enjoys about 1.2 billion views everyday. The platform already has similar licensing deals with Warner Bros, Paramount, Fox, NBCUniversal, and Sony Pictures Television.
